Dark places - Gillian Flynn
"Nei luoghi oscuri" di Gillian Flynn, edito da Piemme in Italia.
L'autrice è quella di "Gone girl" ("L'amore bugiardo" in italiano), se non lo avete letto leggetelo e/o guardate il film perché merita... sempre che vi piaccia il genere thriller e non vi spaventi un po' di morti violente.
Anche questo libro è un thriller e lascia molto col fiato sospeso.
E' la storia di Libby Day, sopravvissuta all'uccisione della madre e delle due sorelle da parte del fratello Ben, presunto adoratore del diavolo, che lei stessa ha accusato al processo. La storia di Libby si svolge ai giorni nostri, ventiquattro anni dopo il delitto, ma i capitoli in cui è lei ad essere protagonista sono intervallati da capitoli che si svolgono il giorno prima del delitto, scritti dal punto di vista della madre o del fratello.
Libby, alla ricerca di soldi, decide di aiutare I membri di un "Kill Club" a trovare il vero colpevole, visto che per loro non può assolutamente essere Ben. Quello che all'inizio per lei è solo un modo per avere dei soldi, diventa per Libby la ricerca di cosa è davvero accaduto quella notte.
Già il fatto che ci siano diversi punti di vista mi è piaciuto, come al solito, in più quello che succede nel passato ha connessioni con quello che sta accadendo nel presente e lascia davvero la voglia di continuare a leggere un capitolo dopo l'altro.
Assolutamente consigliato, ma solo per chi non è facilmente impressionabile (devo dire che pure io ho rinunciato subito a leggerlo la sera perché mi metteva un po' di agitazione).
Il film basato sul libro è in uscita ad agosto.

This book is a thriller too and with a lot of suspense.
The story is about Libby Day, survivor of the killing of her mother and two sisters by her brother, Ben, accused to be a devil worshipper, who Libby testimonied against at the trial. Libby's story happens at the present day, 24 years after the murders, but the chapters are interspersed with chapters describing her mother or Ben, the day before the murders. Libby, searching for money, decides to help the people of a 'Kill Club' to understand who committed the murders, because nobody believes it was really Ben. At the beginning for her is just the search for money, but soon it becomes the research of the truth of what happened for real that night.
I liked, as usually, that some chapters have different points of view, and what happened in the past has connection with what is happening in the present, creating a suspense that push to read the next chapters.
I strongly recommend this book, but only for people not impressionable (I couldn't read it late in the evening because I became a little agitated).
The movie based on the novel is going to be out in the theatres in August.

Open City - Teju Cole
Book club di giugno.
Edito da Einaudi in Italia con il titolo "Citta' aperta".
Un sacco di recensioni lo acclamano come un libro su New York, a me non è sembrato che lo sia.
Il protagonista è un medico nigeriano che vive a New York e passa il suo tempo libero a camminare per la città. Quindi si, le descrizioni dei luoghi si riferiscono ovviamente a New York, ma quelle delle persone e delle interazioni non hanno niente di specifico di questa città, poteva benissimo essere in una città qualsiasi.
Ad un certo punto se ne va in vacanza a Bruxelles e quindi parte del libro descrive invece questa città (e peraltro è anche più interessante).
Il libro non ha dialoghi, è tutto un flusso di pensieri del protagonista.
Non mi è piaciuto, le altre del book club l'hanno abbandonato dopo poche pagine e io ancora mi chiedo come ho fatto a finirlo. La maggior parte dei pensieri del protagonista rimangono sospesi a metà e dopo un po' la lettura diventa davvero noiosa. Io capisco che il flusso di coscienza non sempre deve avere una logica, ma così ha proprio poco senso.
Interessanti alcune interazioni con altre persone, ma in generale mi pare rimangano relazioni molto superficiali.
Non consigliato. Ma se qualcuno lo legge e non è d'accordo con me possiamo discuterne.

A lot of reviews say this is a book about New York, I completely disagree.
The main character is a doctor from Nigeria living in New York who spend is free time walking in the city. The descriptions of the city are, of course, of New York, but the people he sees and interacts with don't have anything specific, it could have been anywhere.
At one point he goes in vacation in Brussels, so part of the book is then about this city (and it was even more interesting to me).
There aren't dialogues, the entire book is a train of thought of the doctor.
I didn't like it, nobody in the book club read more than few pages, and I am still thinking how did I manage to arrive to the end. Half of the thoughts are often incomplete and after a while the reading becomes really boring. I understand that the train of thought not always has to be logic, but like this it is almost annoying.
Some of the interactions with other people are kind of interesting, but in general I think they are a bit superficial.
Not recommended. If someone reads it and disagrees with me we can discuss about it.

Euphoria - Lily King
Questo era per il book club di aprile che pero' e' slittato a Maggio.
Non trovo una traduzione in italiano, purtroppo.
E' la storia di tre antropologi in Nuova Guinea negli anni '30. Nell Stone, gia' una famosa antropologa, e il marito Fen (non così famoso e per questo geloso dei successi della moglie) stanno fuggendo da una delle tribù di cui stavano studiando gli usi. L'intenzione è quella di tornare in Australia, ma l'incontro con Andrew Bankson li fa decidere per fermarsi invece a studiare una nuova tribù sempre lungo il fiume Sepik.
Bankson sente la necessità di avere dei colleghi con cui scambiare opinioni dopo anni di lavoro da solo. Ma la vicinanza di Nell si trasforma, da un primo interesse puramente lavorativo, in una storia d'amore.
Interessante la modalità di scrittura, in terza persona nei capitoli con il punto di vista di Nell, in prima quando a raccontare è Bankson o i diari di lei. Mi piace sempre quando ci sono diversi punti di vista nel racconto. Oltretutto questo causa anche salti temporali che lasciano un po' in sospeso e con la voglia di leggere il capitolo successivo.
Interessanti anche i punti di vista sull'antropologia, all'epoca una scienza nuova, e il modo in cui i diversi personaggi si rapportano alle popolazioni che sono oggetto del loro studio. Le tribù nominate e le descrizioni dei paesaggi sono di invenzione ma probabilmente presi in parte da documenti reali. Il personaggio di Nell Stone dovrebbe essere ispirato da un'antropologa dell'epoca, di cui però non conosco molto (ve la potete comodamente cercare su wikipedia).
La prima parte del libro è però un po' lenta e, sinceramente, alcuni capitoli e personaggi mi sembrano assolutamente inutili per lo svolgimento successivo della storia. Per fortuna sono riuscita a superare lo scoglio dei primi capitoli perché il resto ne valeva la pena.
In definitiva il libro mi è piaciuto, una buona scelta del book club. Le altre partecipanti al book club hanno avuto il mio stesso giudizio sul libro.

Nell Stone, already a well known anthropologist, and her husband Fen (not as famous as her and for this reason really jealous of her successes) are escaping from one of the tribe they were studying. Their idea is to go back to Australia, but the meeting with Andrew Bankson make them decide to stop to study another tribe along the Sepik river.
Bankson wants to have some colleagues close by, after years of work in the field by himself. But the interest on Nell, at the beginning purely on the work side, changes soon in a love story.
I found interesting the way the story is told, in third person when Nell's point of view is described, but in first person when is Bankson or Nell's diary to speak. I always like when there are different points of view in a novel. Also, this changes causes some temporal jumps, that help in keeping the reader wanting to read the next chapter.
Interesting also the anthropologic description of the tribes and of the work these people where doing in understanding different cultures, every characters has a different approach with the populations they were studying. The tribes in the novel are fiction, but I believe based on some real documents. Also Nell Stone characters is based on a real anthropologist, but I don't know a lot about it (you can easily serch it in wikipedia).
The first part of the book is really slow and, to be honest, some chapters and characters are in my opinion completely useless for the subsequent plot. I luckily passed the first part because the rest of the book is absolutely worth reading it.
To conclude, I liked this book and the others in my book club had the same opinion as me.
