Book club (really long post)

Non mi pare di averlo spiegato bene, ma faccio parte di un book club.
La mia coinquilina mi ha invitato qualche mese ad unirmi al gruppo di amiche lettrici a cui si era da poco unita anche lei.
Quindi una volta al mese ci troviamo, ceniamo assieme, chiacchieriamo e parliamo del libro che avremo dovuto leggere quel mese... in teoria, perché poi spesso qualcuna non l'ha letto o non l'ha ancora finito. In quel caso, se il libro vale davvero la pena, si cerca di non rovinare la trama a chi non l'ha letto e allo stesso tempo a convincerle a finirlo.
Finora grazie al club ho letto dei libri che probabilmente da sola non mi sarei messa a leggere, non conoscendo molti autori statunitensi.

I don't think I explained really well about the book club I joined.
My roomate invited me to join the book club she joined recently before I moved in, with some of her friends.
Once a month we meet for dinner, chatting and to talk about the book we should have been read that month... theoretically, because often someone didn't read or finish the book. If that the case and the book is good, we try to not to spoil it but at the same time to convince them to read it through the end.
Up to now I read some books I wouldn't probably choose by myself, considering I don't now many US authors.

•  The Interestings - Meg Wolitzer: la storia di cinque persone che si sono incontrate per la prima volta da adolescenti. Il romanzo segue tutta la loro vita seguente. Sinceramente la storia di per se stessa non è super eccezionale, e uno dei personaggi è quasi insopportabile, ma quello che mi è piaciuto è stato lo stile di scrittura: l'autrice va continuamente dal presente al passato in continui flashback e anticipazioni.
• The Interestings - Meg Wolitzer: the story follows five people form the first meeting at a summer camp in their teens, up to the adult life. To be honest the plot is not great, and I really dislike one of the characters, but the style is really good. The author goes back and forth with flasbacks and jumps in the future.

• L'interprete dei malanni - Jhumpa Lahiri: questa è una raccolta di storie brevi. Tutte le storie seguono diversi emigranti dall'India o che visitano l'India. Non so, io non sono una gran fan delle storie brevi, in generale un paio mi sono piaciute ma quasi tutte rimangono con un finale sospeso che non apprezzo davvero.
• Interpreter of Maladies - Jhumpa Lahiri: short stories. All the stories are about Indian emigrants or people going back to India. I am not a huge fan of short stories, I liked a couple of them but almost all don't really have an end, so I didn't appreciate them.

• E' il tuo giorno, Billy Lynn! - Ben Fountain: il libro è tutto ambientato durante una partita di football e segue il protagonista, Billy Lynn un soldato, nei suoi giri per lo stadio assieme agli altri della sua, momentaneamente a casa negli States per una specie di tour celebrativo dopo aver vinto una battaglia in Iraq. La storia e i temi trattati sono molto interessanti, ma secondo me l'autore poteva tagliare il libro di almeno 150 pagine e ne veniva fuori una bella storia lo stesso. Merita di essere letto, ma se salta qualche pagina va benissimo lo stesso.
• Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk - Ben Fountain: the book takes place during a football game. The main charcter, Billy, is a soldier, and with his squad they are back in the US for a celebrative tour after winning a battle in Iraq. The narrative and the arguments are really interesting, but I think the author could have remove at least 150 pages and the book was going to be good anyway. It deserves to be read, but skipping pages is a good idea.

• Il tempo delle farfalle - Julia Alvarez: questo è il libro che mi è piaciuto di più tra quelli scelti per il club. Leggetelo. E la storia romanzata, ma tratta da fatti reali, delle quattro sorelle Mirabal nella Repubblica Dominicana durante la dittatura di Trujillo. Le sorelle sono famose per aver fatto parte del gruppo che tentò di liberare il paese dalla dittatura. Il libro racconta la storia cambiando continuamente punto di vista da una sorella all'altra, con un diverso stile di scrittura a seconda di chi parla. Bello.
• In the time of the butterflies - Julia Alvarez: this is my favourite book from the ones I read for the book club. Read it. It is a novel, but based on real history, about the four sisters Mirabal on the Dominican Republic during the dictatorship of Trujillo. The sisters are famous to have been involved in the attempt of liberation of the country. The book is jumping from the point of views of the sisters, changing the style with each one of them. Beautiful.

• Reservation Blues - Sherman Alexie: questo è il libro che non ho finito... perché mi è arrivato il libro della Kinsella... e anche perché era un po' difficile da seguire. Non so bene se era un inglese difficile per me (un po' lo era) o i dettagli sulle leggende dei nativi americani che mi sfuggono, ma ho deciso di abbandonarlo. Non mi pare che le altre al book club l'abbiano davvero apprezzato.
• Reservation Blues - Sherman Alexie: I didn't finish this one... because I received the last of the shopaholic book... and also because it was hard to read. I don't know if it was the English hard for me or the details about the native american stories that I don't know, but I decided to not to finish it. I didn't have the impression that the other girls at the book club really liked it.

Questo mese leggiamo "Promettimi che ci sarai" di Carol Rifka Brunt. L'ho iniziato oggi pomeriggio e sono già a pagina 50. Promette bene, vi farò sapere.

This month we are reading "Tell the wolves I'm home" - Carol Rifka Brunt. I began to read it this afternoon and I am already at page 50. It seems good.
